Screens are used for separation and elimination of massive matters transferred by primary water. Screens protect further equipment from being hit by large items which can block connecting pipelines and different sections.


Screens are always installed before water and waste water treatment facilities in the way of liquid independent from the way of waste water supply — gravity flow or under pressure.

There are several types of screens: drum, inclined and step. Every screen has its advantages and disadvantages.

The working principle of all types of screens differs with the recovery method of large impurities from waste water and also some additional functions in the form of ability to process waste water and the type of waste water processing.

Selection of this very type of screen is based on such factors as:

  • contamination level of waste water;
  • place for unit installation;
  • number of following cleaning steps
  • necessity of minor particles elimination at this stage.

Inclined screens are used for elimination of massive matters from waste water.


Inclined screens are metal cores fastened in the frame, installed obliquely or vertically. The clarification process is that conditionally clear water goes through the screen which holds large contaminants. Clarification efficiency primarily depends on distance between screen cores.

With the course of time, screens can be blocked. That's why they should be cleaned manually or automatically. Contaminants held by cores are cleaned with mechanical scrapers, which can be located before the cores or after them. Contaminants held by screens are collected in hoppers. Afterwards they are recycled (taken to technical and domestic waste polygons).



Drum screens are used for the extraction of average and small garbage from waste water and their further download to transporting units.


Clarified water flow is supplied by pump station to a top mechanical drum screen. The top part of the screen has special draining, through which waste water is supplied to the filter drum in laminar flow. Solid particles whose size exceeds the filter drum spacing remain on its surface and filtered water goes to special water storage.

Solid particles held by the filter drum are eliminated by a special blade when rotating, collected in the container and then recycled.

Step screens


Step screens are used for primary treatment of waste water and extraction of large inclusions and various debris trash.


The working principle of step screens involves waste water filtering through step plate packets which are fixed and fastened on the screen, and mobile performing plane parallel rotation against fixed plates. Due to plate movements, solid particles are lifted from one step to another, reaching the top part of the screen. Afterwards they are disposed and further transported.

Mobile step plates work on the principle of reverse flow. Thereby the self-cleaning action is achieved over the screen. There is no need in these special means of purifying for washing, scraper or brushes.

When implementing step screen, the working principle is that contaminants layer can be formed on its working surface which forms an additional filtering effect. This leads to an increase of filtration efficiency.

The work of the step screen is usually performed in cyclical mode but it can work continuously. The working cycle duration of the step screen depends on waste water consumption and contaminants composition.

Contaminants held by cores are collected into containers and periodically sent for recycling.
